Today we had a nice escape to Long Key Nature Center located in Davie, FL. It was such a nice day, despite the Florida heat, that we decided to go somewhere beautiful. The flora and fauna found at the nature center give a good representation of what south Florida use to be like before the area was drained out. Originally, Long Key was an island but when the area was drained out that was no longer the case. The area is now easily accessible and despite the occasional hum of traffic in the background and an occasional plane passing over head, it is easy to forget that civilization is close by.
The pond area was full of dragonflies and butterflies. The calm water seems to be a great place for the dragonflies to lay their eggs. After the pond it was great to be under Live Oaks. They created the perfect shade for a hot summer day. Now, I’m not a fan of spiders but they were EVERYWHERE! At one point we had to turn around because the webs were in the walk way and there was no way around them. Even still, it was a great escape from the hustle and bustle of every day life. It was nice to just get away and focus on something simple and beautiful. I can’t even tell you how many butterflies I ran after!
Hopefully, we will be able to escape the regularities of life a little more each week and be able to offer some more pictures. Try and escape for a bit, even if it’s just for a walk around the block. Turn your cell phone off, don’t put headphones on, escape to a park or garden, and just listen to the birds sing or the crickets chirp and relax.
